Here is a new one for the list: James W. Von Brunn.

A security guard and two other people were shot today inside the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in downtown Washington, authorities said.

U.S. Park Police said a gunman armed with a shotgun opened fire on the security guard and that other security guards returned fire. The gunman was reported wounded.

The shooting was reported to police at 12:52 p.m., and officers rushed to the scene just south of Independence Ave. bordering the Mall.

Scores of police and emergency vehicles converged on the scene, blocking 14th Street, a major artery between downtown Washington and the Virginia suburbs.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department spokesman Alan Etter said there was no immediate information on the shooter. He said two men were transported to a hospital with “serious” gunshot wounds.

One witness, Dave Unruh, of Wichita, Kan., said he was waiting to enter the museum when he heard one gunshot, then a sequence of four or five gunshots. He said he then heard someone scream, “Hit the floor!” He and his wife, Karen, and their two teenage grandchildren dropped to the floor and were subsequently herded out of the building by authorities.

Unruh called the experience “intensely, extremely frightening.”

By 1 p.m., the street in front of the museum was blocked by a museum police officer. A group of schoolchildren was rushed onto a chartered luxury coach and the bus driver struggled to pull away from the block.

Washington Post

Talking Points Memo posted a bio of the suspect from a white supremacist website.

This is from his bio, apparently written by himself or someone sympathetic to him: “In 1981 Von Brunn attempted to place the treasonous Federal Reserve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent, citizens arrest. He was tried in a Washington, D.C. Superior Court; convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge. A Jew/Negro/White Court of Appeals denied his appeal. He served 6.5 years in federal prison. (Read about von Brunn’s “Federal Reserve Caper” HERE.) He is now an artist and author and lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.”

And guess what!!

And may be not just hardcore Neo-Nazis on the right who liked Von Brunn’s work. A recent screed he wrote about President Obama’s birth certificate was posted on Free Republic, the conservative site.

But clicking on the Freeper link won’t bring you to this Right Wing Domestic Terrorist Birther’s post—not anymore.

FreeRepublic actually has some sane conservatives posting to their site, and they must be mortified by this. Good for the site admin not wanting to be associated with that post, but I wonder how long it was up there. Giving a forum to nutjob extremists is always a tricky business.

Here is a Birther post by Von Brunn in a different venue.

Von Brunn’s Wikipedia page has undergone a good scrub today, too.

Here is what it said:

User: James W. von Brunn, b.1920, attempted to place the Federal Resrve Board of Governors under legal, non-violent citizens arrest, 12-7-81. Von Brunn charged the FED with treason and other high crimes. The FED, a private stock-company, owned by International bankers, financed the construction of manufacturing plants in the Soviet Union during the “Cold War.” War materials, produced by FED financed plants, were used by the Enemy against American military forces in Viet Nam, and elsewhere.

Von Brunn was tried and convicted by a Washington, D.C. kangaroo court; then sentenced to eleven years in federal prison by Judge Harriet Rosen Taylor; the sentence was confirmed by a racially motivated Appeals Court. Von Brunn was imprisoned for 6.5-years.

Von Brunn champions Western Culture, and the practice of Eugenics. He states that Marxism-Multiculturalism-Judaism is the Enemy of Mankind.citing Talmudic quotes to “Kill the Best Gentiles !”

Von Brunn was president of his college fraternity, SAE. He served as PT-Boat captain, USNR, during WW2, earning 4-battle stars and a Commendation Ribbon. This is an old man, a WWII veteran. It’s a shame he went to the dark side. I can’t help feeling rather sad for him, but nowhere near as sad as I feel for the victims and their families.

Never again let be said that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano didn’t have her head screwed on right with that right wing domestic terrorism report.

They’re out there and they are coming in.

Scott Roeder called The Associated Press on Sunday from the Sedgwick County jail where he’s being held on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault in the death of Dr. George Tiller.

Tiller was killed last Sunday while serving as an usher at the Lutheran church he attended in Wichita.

Roeder told the AP he know of “similar events planned around the country” as long as abortion is legal.

He would not elaborate.

For someone new on the job, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano sure knew what she was talking about.

The man, identified as Daniel James Murray, is charged with making threats against the president of the United States.

He recently withdrew $85,000 from a Utah bank and told a teller: “We are on a mission to kill the president of the United States,” according to court papers.

Murray is originally from New York, but was seen several times in late May in St. George, Utah, making bizarre statements at a bank.

According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Utah, Murray opened an account at Zions First National Bank on May 19 with a $85,000 check.

“With all this mess going on under President Obama with banks and the economy, I’m sure if citizens happen to lose their money, they will rise up and we could see killing and deaths,” he said, according to the criminal complaint.

On May 27, he returned to the bank and tried to withdraw $12,000, but lacked proper identification.

“Not to be disrespectful, but if I don’t get this money, someone is going to die,” Murray said, according to the criminal complaint.

A bank manager was summoned and Murray was allowed to withdraw the money without proper identification.

Murray would not accept a check and demanded bills no larger than $50, the complaint says.

“We are 94 million miles from the sun, and are in between the sun and moon, and the eagle that flies between them and it’s a giant step for mankind. … I have traveled thousands of miles to be here and know things that are going to happen. … the banking system will fail and people will die. … there will be chaos in the world,” Murray said.

He then made his threat against the president, the complaint says.

The next day, Murray returned to the bank, withdrew the rest of his money and closed the account.

Authorities do not know where Murray is and said he has been seen driving a blue 2001 Buick LeSabre with New York license plate number ERL 1445.

I have a question: Why was this potential political assassin not reported to police and arrested in between visits to the bank?

May he rot in maximum security, if convicted of this heinous political assassination.

Thomas said Muhammad would be charged with first-degree murder, plus 15 counts of committing a terroristic act. He said those counts result from the gunfire occurring near other people.

The captured suspect was under FBI investigation.

The suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of one soldier and the critical injury of another at a Little Rock, Ark., Army recruiting booth today was under investigation by the FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task Force since his return from Yemen, ABC News has learned.

Scott Roeder, who assassinated Dr. Tiller three days ago and is being held on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault, has not yet been charged with committing terrorist acts or otherwise, though he shot Dr. Tiller in church near other people. He is expected to be charged today with “murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.”

Nor, to my knowledge, was the FBI investigating him despite his previous arrest for having bomb-making materials in his car. A clinic worker, suspecting Roeder was vandalizing the premises, had called the FBI in the week before the shooting.

In April 1996, the police stopped Mr. Roeder near Topeka for a traffic violation. Inside the car, they found a pound of gunpowder and a homemade fuse, according to published reports. Mr. Roeder was found guilty of charges including one connected to the explosives and served jail time, though an appeals court later dismissed the explosives charges after Mr. Roeder’s lawyers argued that the search of his car had been improper.

At his sentencing in the case, The Topeka Capital-Journal noted, Judge James Buchele of Shawnee County District Court said Mr. Roeder presented a “threat of danger to the public.”

In addition, Mr. Roeder’s connection to right wing extremist groups is long-standing.

For more than 10 years, Mr. Roeder had been linked, at various times and in varying degrees, to the Freemen, a group that rejected federal authority and the banking system, and to people who believe that the killing of abortion providers was justified by the abortions it prevented.

The FBI is involved since the shooting, but was the FBI investigating him before or not? I would hope so, but if not, why not? Both of these domestic terrorists, if found guilty, need equal treatment under the law, regardless of race and religion, and to be locked away forever.

The right wing domestic terrorist Scott P. Roeder, who is the captured suspect in the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in church on Sunday, was a subscriber to “Prayer and Action News,” which advocates “justifiable homicide.”

Right wing domestic terrorist Paul Hill, a prominent proponent of “justifiable homicide,” assassinated Dr. John Bayard Britton, along with retired Air Force Lt. Col. James Herman Barrett, in the summer of 1994.

A year earlier, Tiller had been shot in both arms with a semiautomatic by right wing domestic terrorist Shannon Shelley, a member of the extremist anti-choice group Army of God, listed on the FBI’s Counterterorism site for sending anthrax threats to abortion clinics in 2001. Roeder is said to have visited Shelley in prison.

As of this morning, Operation Rescue’s website has been taken down, but a Google cache shows Scott Roeder posted there a year ago. Another poster, using the screen name “The Kinneys” in the thread linked above, said: “God has Tiller’s number and it won’t be long now.” Roeder posted to an online petition to prosecute Tiller (also today offline), he “needs to be stopped before he and those who protect him bring judgement upon our nation.”

In the summer of 1992, God had Dr. David Gunn’s number, too, when “wanted” posters were distributed at an Operation Rescue rally bearing his photo, address and phone number. Dr. Gunn was assassinated by right wing domestic terrorist Michael Frederick Griffin the following year.

When Dr. Barnett Slepian was shot to death by right wing domestic terrorist James Kopp in 1998 in Buffalo, New York, Governor George Pataki called it what it was: “It’s beyond a tragedy. It’s really an act of terrorism and, in my mind, a cold-blooded assassination.”

Right wing domestic terrorist Clayton Lee Waagner, who kept an assassination list of 42, and claimed to have stalked over 100 abortion clinics in 19 states, posted to the Army of God website: “I am a terrorist.”

The Army of God seemed pleased to have him (and continues to host his personal website):

“Time will tell if Clayton will obey the voice of God in this matter,” writes the Army of God webmaster, Rev. Don Spitz, in an introduction to Waagner’s message. “Many anti-abortionists believe God opened the door of escape for Clayton to give Clayton a second chance to do God’s will.”

The second chance, if God grants it, would expand the target pool:

Since then, Waagner has concluded that doctors are too well protected to be targets of violence, and says he will be “going after everyone else. Anyone who works at an abortion location or Planned Parenthood (I don’t care if their location actually performs abortions or not. ALL Planned Parenthood locations are targets.). It doesn’t matter to me if you’re a nurse, receptionist, bookkeeper, or janitor, if you work for the murderous abortionist I’m going to kill you.”

Right wing domestic terrorist John C. Salvi III, of course, had been there and done that, assassinating two Massachusetts receptionists in separate clinics in 1994.

Dr. Tiller’s alleged assassin, it is reported, had a post-it note in his car with Operation Rescue’s phone number written on it:

KMBC-TV in Kansas City reported that the suspect had a post-it note with the phone number of anti-abortion group Operation Rescue in his car, however that group issued a statement this morning denouncing the shooting.

The number belonged to Cheryl Sullenger, Operation Rescue’s senior policy adviser.

As Ann Friedman points out today on The American Prospect:

According to the National Abortion Federation, since 2000 abortion providers have reported 14 arsons, 78 death threats, 66 incidents of assault and battery, 117 anthrax threats, 128 bomb threats, 109 incidents of stalking, 541 acts of vandalism, one bombing, and one attempted murder.

And:

Even if no national anti-choice group directly ordered him to fire that gun, he is a product of a culture that thrives on systematically threatening reproductive health care providers and women who seek abortions. Militant anti-choice groups like Operation Rescue — which has endorsed intimidation tactics in the past — released statements yesterday condemning Tiller’s assassination.

But after years of sending the message to its avid base that Tiller was a sub-human monster, a press release expressing dismay at the killing does little good. On the sidebar of the Operation Rescue blog, near where the press release appeared, was a small image featuring Dr. Tiller’s face, some very sinister-looking flames, and the words “America’s Doctor of Death,” linking to a detailed dossier about all of Tiller’s offenses. Other groups keep databases of reproductive health providers’ addresses and phone numbers, all but daring their members to conduct harassment campaigns.

That same fiery image of Dr. Tiller’s face appears on the Army of God website today, at the very top, celebrating yet another political assassination by yet another right wing domestic terrorist. The media, too often, presents these cases as plain murders, but they are what they are, political assassinations carried out by right wing domestic terrorists provided aid and comfort by anti-choice groups.

Perhaps Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano deserves an apology from the media, as well as some in the right wing blogosphere:

You may recall the enormous controversy that erupted in April over a Department of Homeland Security report that assessed the threat of “right wing extremists.” The story provoked days of nonstop cable chatter, and DHS chief Janet Napolitano ultimately apologized.

Are they sorry now? If only.
