In The Economist:

Now, having read all that you might well ask who cares. Hard-core birthers ye will always have with you; they rely upon a hardy zombie of an argument and a resolute imperviousness to facts. But for four years Republicans have been dipping their toes in the fetid swamp that is birtherism, too scared to call a lie a lie. Besides, it proved useful in whipping up suspicion and hostility against Mr Obama. The interesting question now is what happens if Mitt Romney selects Marco Rubio, born in Miami to two Cuban parents, as his running mate? What happens if Nikki Haley or Bobby Jindal, born in America to Punjabi parents, seeks the presidency in 2016? If Mr Obama is ineligible then they are too. My guess is you will see the swamp left to the swamp creatures.

President Obama’s so-called “Jewish Problem” has received a great deal of attention, with headlines like “Why Obama Is Losing the Jewish Vote” appearing regularly, even though the president is likely to win a comfortable majority among Jewish voters this fall. Obama’s purported “Hispanic problem” faces similar factual hurdles.

Maybe, then, it’s time for attention to turn elsewhere: Mitt Romney’s problem with working-class white voters, a key part of the Republican coalition in recent elections. As the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent notes, these voters aren’t too happy about the fact that Mitt Romney pays a very low tax rate on the millions of dollars he makes every year:

[A] big majority of blue collar whites, 67 percent, says that Romney’s not paying his fair share in taxes, suggesting Obama’s emphasis on tax fairness may be helping him make some headway in winning them back.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll Sargent referred to also found that 49 percent of whites who earn less than $50,000 a year think of Romney’s wealth as a “negative because it suggests he benefited from opportunities that are not available to most people,” compared to just 40 percent who see it as a “positive because it suggests he has achieved the American dream.” White non-college graduates are split roughly evenly on questions of whether Romney did more to create or cut jobs in his business career and whether his wealth is a positive or a negative.

And last week, in the wake of Romney’s statement that he isn’t concerned about the poor, the Pew Research Center noted that “57% of lower-income Republican and Republican-leaning voters said the government does too little for poor people.” (Pew didn’t break the data down by race, but given that the vast majority of Republican voters are white, it’s safe to conclude that lower-income white Republicans think the government does too little for the poor.)

Political Correction.

WASHINGTON — A feared wave of homegrown terrorism by radicalized Muslim Americans has not materialized, with plots and arrests dropping sharply over the two years since an unusual peak in 2009, according to a new study by a North Carolina research group.

The study, to be released on Wednesday, found that 20 Muslim Americans were charged in violent plots or attacks in 2011, down from 26 in 2010 and a spike of 47 in 2009.

Charles Kurzman, the author of the report for the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security, called terrorism by Muslim Americans “a minuscule threat to public safety.” Of about 14,000 murders in the United States last year, not a single one resulted from Islamic extremism, said Mr. Kurzman, a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina. …

“Fortunately, very few of these people are competent and very few get to the stage of preparing an attack without coming to the attention of the authorities,” Mr. Kurzman said.

Obama WINS! Futile lawsuits are reasonably sure to follow, given these are Birthers we’re talking about, and the Birther movement is oddly flush with money this re-election year. (If you know where the bucks are coming from, please register at The Fogbow and tell us what you know.) But they will be a gaggle of Republicans, including a GOP county chair, suing the Georgia Secretary of State, a Republican, who will be defended by the State Attorney General, a Republican. Good luck, suckers. Obama’s outta here.

Today, Georgia Secretary of State Brian P. Kemp Adopted the Recommendation on February 3, by Administrative Law Judge Michael Malihi, of the Office of State Administrative Hearings, that Barack Obama, a citizen at birth, is a natural born citizen and eligible as a presidential candidate in the primary election.

Press Release:

Atlanta – Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp today issued his final decision on challenges contending that President Barack Obama does not meet the State of Georgia’s eligibility requirements for his name to be listed on the 2012 Presidential Preference Primary ballot.

Secretary Kemp stated, “After careful consideration of Administrative Law Judge Michael Malihi’s initial decision and all record evidence based on the criteria set forth in this process, I find that the Respondent, President Barack Obama, meets the State of Georgia’s eligibility requirements. President Barack Obama’s name shall remain on the Democratic Party’s 2012 Presidential Preference Primary ballot.”

In other words, screw the Birthers, yeah. And congrats to Mike Jablonski for the empty chair.

(Reuters) – Anti-government extremists opposed to taxes and regulations pose a growing threat to local law enforcement officers in the United States, the FBI warned on Monday.

These extremists, sometimes known as “sovereign citizens,” believe they can live outside any type of government authority, FBI agents said at a news conference.

The extremists may refuse to pay taxes, defy government environmental regulations and believe the United States went bankrupt by going off the gold standard.

Routine encounters with police can turn violent “at the drop of a hat,” said Stuart McArthur, deputy assistant director in the FBI’s counterterrorism division.

“We thought it was important to increase the visibility of the threat with state and local law enforcement,” he said. …

“We are being inundated right now with requests for training from state and local law enforcement on sovereign-related matters,” said Casey Carty, an FBI supervisory special agent.

The Indiana Secretary of State that was, Republican Charlie White, having been tossed from office upon conviction of voter fraud, doesn’t have enough problems. He is now hearing from Dr. Orly Taitz, Esq., who has always liked her felons, and get a load of those fonts.

She’s gone and sent him her first amended complaint from Farrar v. Obama in Georgia, the hearing transcript, proposed Findings of Fact & Case Law, an emergency appeal to the Secretary of State of Georgia, and what my friend Piffle refers to as, “a collection of memorabilia called a ‘case file’.” Piffle also notes, with all that, she somehow forgot to attach the Administrative Judge’s Recommendation to the Georgia Secretary of State that President Obama, a natural born citizen, should remain on the Georgia ballot.

So, what does Mad Ol’ Orly want from Charlie White? She wants him to send her stuff to the Indiana elections board. I guess he’s got time on his hands. But most of all, she wants somebody, anybody, anywhere, to help offset that downright Muslim judge (whatever his religion may be) in Georgia, who was able to see straight through her–and eventually reverse Ankeny v. Governor of Indiana, which has become the big fly in her ointment.

This was supposed to be Mitt Romney’s week. Back-to-back wins in Florida and Nevada have helped to cement him as the all-but-certain Republican nominee.

Instead, the latest ABC News-Washington Post poll points to President Obama as the biggest winner of the GOP primary contest.

President Obama has snuck ahead of Romney among registered voters, 51 percent to 45 percent. What’s more, 50 percent of voters in the new poll approve of Obama’s job performance and the same percentage say he deserves re-election.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2012 – President Barack Obama has nominated Lt. Gen. Janet C. Wolfenbarger to the rank of general, and as commander of Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta announced today.

The promotion would make Wolfenbarger the Air Force’s first female four-star general.

“The secretary strongly supports the president’s nomination, and he believes that General Wolfenbarger is an outstanding Air Force officer,” Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said today. “The fact that she would be the first woman to wear a fourth star in the Air Force, if confirmed, is a testament to her skills, experience and dedication.”

If confirmed by the Senate, Wolfenbarger would become the military’s second female officer to receive four stars behind Army Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, commander of Army Materiel Command, who was promoted to general in 2008.
